ECHE

EarthWise and Citizens' Health Empowerment, Nigeria.

Earthwise & Citizens' Health Empowerment (ECHE) is a non-profit organisation born out of a passion for health and people's well-being. The conception was triggered from the understanding of risk factors that predisposes individuals to ill health.

As a cancer researcher, ECHE has the passion to have deep understanding of mechanisms of cancer. This prompted her to look at various risk factors and decided to launch an NGO that will create awareness of bringing the understanding of risk factors to the attention of people and the community in order to promote acquisition of knowledge on good health practices

ECHE steps to creating, promoting and maintain liveable and healthy environment hence the name of Earthwise & Citizens' Health Empowerment.

ECHE will be hosting workshops, seminars, summits, outreaches-visiting communities to encourage healthy living, serve as intermediary between Governmental bodies, Policy makers, private organisations and the public.

In our quest for promoting good heath, the state of environment is top on our list. Humans live in a bubble, and that bubble is our environment. Focusing on the source of light, i.e. Energy; we believe that every community deserves to have light, but its source must be human friendly. Thus, ECHE  is seeking to ensure that Energy is provided to allow liveable and healthy environment in Nigeria and Africa at large.

ECHE will give you the opportunity to make your concern known, work with you, your Councillors, Governors, and local companies to ensure that you have the healthy bubble.

Coming up! Summit: Green-Renewable Energy and Climate in Nigeria

Problem

There is an immense environmental pollution in Nigeria-particularly Niger Delta states.  The occurrence of Black soothe- “Black snow” settling on cars has been on the increase. The health of residence in Niger Delta states is continuously deteriorating, with increasing statistics on disease occurrence such as respiratory disorder, impaired vision, loss of memory, and cancer. Although air pollution is implicated in approximately 1% of all cancer cases; In Nigeria, pollution is a major contributor to cancer cases and deaths, accounting for up to 80% of the risk factors.

Environmental pollutants are a source of trigger to homeostasis redox disruption-posing as cellular oxidative stress, thereby establishing inflammation, and cell death. Methane affects human health via various interconnected pathways. It is a short-lived powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and contaminates the air, water and soil. High level of exposure to methane causes adverse effect to human health.

Gas Flare, Health and socio-economic concern: Among several benefits of tilling the Niger Delta land for profit, a major factor which is the utilization of the Gas flaring for generation of electricity for the population of Niger Delta states and even for the entire nation has been trodden under rug over decades. Thus, Gas flaring not being put to proper use, has poised environmental pollution to Niger Delta states and its residence. To mention a few, the quality of plantations/farm is impacted, productivity of farmland which feeds the population of Niger Delta states can be a major concern to the health and wellbeing of residence.  Clearly, understanding the elements associated with pollution due to Gas flare is drawing attention to the role of pollution in cancers. Therefore, addressing the usefulness of Gas flare, as well as the necessity for Green-Renewable energy to reduce/eliminate pollution and improve the wellbeing and socio-economic state of the population is mandatory. We cannot afford to “drag our feet” and allow time to pass by. The issue of climate change is a necessity to be addressed now, for a future of smiles to be achieved. Investors in Energy sector is required in Nigeria, innovators in Green-Renewable energy require funds to propagate Energy projects. Governmental support is required. We need to take “The Bull (environmental pollution) by The Horn”
